Description

The CDM project activity for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through the catalytic destruction of N2O was implemented in Abu Qir, Egypt in 2006. The project activity includes the development, design, engineering, procurement, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of an N2O reduction system. The EnviNOx® process used in the Nitric Acid Plant II (hereinafter referred to as “NA”) of Abu Qir Fertilizer Co. (hereinafter referred to as “AFC”) is based on the catalytic reduction of NOx (NO and NO2) with ammonia (NH3) and nitrous oxide (N2O) with a hydrocarbon. The hydrocarbon used is natural gas, the main component of which is methane (CH4). The reactions take place over two iron zeolite catalyst beds.

As the objective of the project activity is to significantly reduce N2O emissions from NA production at AFC’s NA II plant, it generates environmental, economic and social benefits, thereby contributing to the promotion of sustainable development in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The catalytic N2O destruction project activity reduces N2O emissions that would otherwise be emitted in the absence of the CDM project activity. This results in significant global environmental benefits and contributes to mitigating dangerous climate change. The technology transfer leads to a better understanding of state-of-the-art air pollution control technologies in Egypt. In addition, plant personnel will benefit from training in the operation and maintenance of the tertiary abatement equipment. In addition, the project operator agreed to allocate a portion of the total revenue from the sale of RECs to a social fund for the Abu Qir area. This fund contributes to the social benefit of the people living in the CDM project activity area by financing sustainable projects such as schools, hospitals and infrastructure projects.
