THE REGION AND THE COMMUNITIES

The Yungas ecosystem, also known as the Cloud Forest or Tucumano-Bolivian Forest, is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, celebrated for its extraordinary biodiversity.

This forest formation spans nearly 4 million hectares, stretching from Venezuela to Argentina’s Sub-Andean Mountain slopes, covering Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, and parts of Catamarca.

The population includes descendants of European immigrants who maintain their gaucho culture, and 316 indigenous communities such as the Kolla, Guaraní, Ocloyas, Wichí, Qom, and Chane. These communities preserve their customs, worldview, festivals, and sustainable use of natural resources for food and handicrafts.

THE PROJECT

The primary goal is to maximise carbon sequestration in up to 28,000 hectares of native forests, with the possibility of expanding to 130,000 hectares in the future.

In this phase, approximately 1.5 million carbon credits are expected to be generated over the next 30 years. Beyond carbon reduction, the project aims to protect local biodiversity and develop sustainable forestry initiatives that deliver both economic and social benefits to the region.

This initiative is rooted in a Memorandum of Understanding signed in April 2022 between ALLCOT and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Jujuy. The agreement focuses on exploring alternatives to implement forestry projects that generate carbon credits while securing economic resources for forest protection.

CERTIFICATIONS
  • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC): Ensures that forest plantations are sustainable and maximize benefits during the processing and manufacturing of certified wood.
  • VERRA Climate, Community, and Biodiversity (CCB): Improves ecosystem service indicators in the Yungas region

As part of our commitment to transparency and integrity, ALLCOT IO will develop an automated platform for processing forest inventory data. This platform will be aligned with VERRA’s forest management methodology, ensuring data accuracy, project transparency, and long-term sustainability.

This project will be Argentina’s first IFM_VM_003 project and will include the largest certified native forest area in the country, demonstrating a deep commitment to sustainability and economic development in the region.
