THE REGION AND THE COMMUNITIES
The Yungas ecosystem, also known as the Cloud Forest or Tucumano-Bolivian Forest, is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, celebrated for its extraordinary biodiversity.
This forest formation spans nearly 4 million hectares, stretching from Venezuela to Argentina’s Sub-Andean Mountain slopes, covering Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, and parts of Catamarca.
The population includes descendants of European immigrants who maintain their gaucho culture, and 316 indigenous communities such as the Kolla, Guaraní, Ocloyas, Wichí, Qom, and Chane. These communities preserve their customs, worldview, festivals, and sustainable use of natural resources for food and handicrafts.
This initiative is rooted in a Memorandum of Understanding signed in April 2022 between ALLCOT and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Jujuy. The agreement focuses on exploring alternatives to implement forestry projects that generate carbon credits while securing economic resources for forest protection.
